It’s very important to be impeccably dressed at work especially when you have a job that involves meeting clients on a regular basis. The normal dress code for work is professional and women generally tweak it a bit to suit their personal style which is great. However, sometimes we tend to cross that thin line between professionally fashionable to erm… just uncomfortably fashionable. Don’t know what we are talking about? Here is a list of fashions rules every woman should follow at work to keep her style in line with work ethics.
1) Understand your industry’s etiquettes
It’s imperative that you understand the kind of attire that’ll make you look professional in your own field; for instance a corporate lawyer would not like to dress as a fashion editor. But some simple rules apply everywhere for women. It’s best to avoid short hemlines, plunging necklines, exposed under garments, body hugging clothes and heels that are too tall. Work is not a place where you should be remembered for a deep cleavage or short dresses. Keep it simple and be a lady.
2) Get the right fit
Not just at work but otherwise too, women should always wear clothes that fit right. Wearing clothes that are too tight or too loose just reflect how comfortable you are in your conduct. If you are one of those lucky few who lose weight very easily, we recommend finding a good neighbourhood tailor and getting your clothes altered from time to time.
3) When in doubt, go for pumps
Footwear plays a very important role in dressing up for work. Sharp and clean footwear reflects a sharp personality and that’s the only one thing you need the most at work. If you’re ever confused about your footwear for work, go for pumps in black and nude but remember that sky-high pumps are not what you need at work. Go for heels that are maximum at 3.5 inches.
4) Wear the right accessories
Wear a watch, small earrings and maybe a delicate neckpiece if you are a jewellery-lover. Do not load up on accessories and make it look like you are about to topple over the weight of your jewels.
5) Hair
Although women have a lot of hairstyling options to work with, the one important thing to keep in mind is that they are cut well and clean. Never, we say never, go to work with wet hair and water dripping all over your clothes. If you don’t find time to dry your hair in the morning, let them air dry on your way to work and tie them up in a bun or a ponytail.
6) Makeup
When it comes to makeup at work, lesser is better. Avoid putting a heavy face on and dark lip colours, we’re at work not at a lipstick convention. Wear neutral shades of eyes, lips and nail colours and use a light foundation or concealer if you need coverage.
7) Act your age
You don’t want to be dressing up like your daughter at work or in general. Act your age and dress like it at work. Women need to be equally equipped to handle crisis at work during the day as well as having a glass of wine later for a work meeting. Understand that and dress your best.
8) Invest in timeless basics
Every woman must have a black dress, a well-tailored navy/black pinstripe suit, a crisp white shirt and a pair of black trousers. Wear any of these when in doubt, it saves you time and makes you look effortlessly chic.
