What is a gilet?
A gilet is essentially a sleeveless jacket that might look like a cross between a waistcoat and a blouse. Historically, they were designed fitted and had intricate embroidery but with changing times they have evolved into more boxy and casual silhouettes. Gilets don’t have a fixed length, they could be waist-length or knee-length depending on your styling options. What’s important though is that gilets make for the outermost layer of a winter outfit; it’s very difficult to wear another layer over a gilet.
The good news about this latest fall trend is that this urban chic is available in a variety of fabrics and styles, so we urge you to get creative with how you wear it. Fashion gilets are normally made up of faux fur, knitted cloth or quilted fabric, and provide you with extra warmth on those chilly winter days.
You may also throw on a lighter version of a gilet over your summer dress when the weather gets a bit warm. If formal dressing is your preference, go for a straight gilet with clean cuts.
Before we help you with some style tips on how to style your gilets, here’s a fun fact: gilets originated in the 19th century as a dress-bodice shaped like a man’s waistcoat. How’s that for a throwback?
